Rotavirus - Symptoms & Treatment

Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhea among children. Rotaviruses are classified with the Reoviridae family. Rotavirus disease is approximately 2 days. Rotavirus infections are most common in the winter and spring. Rotavirus infections are so common that most children have at least one bout with rotavirus by age 2 or 3. Diarrhea caused by rotavirus results in more than half a million deaths worldwide every year. The disease is characterized by vomiting and watery diarrhea for 3 - 8 days, and fever and abdominal pain occur frequently. Immunity after infection is incomplete, but repeat infections tend to be less severe than the original infection. This is especially true in developing countries, where nutrition and health care are not optimal. Children with a rotavirus infection have fever , nausea, and vomiting , which are often followed by abdominal cramps and frequent, watery diarrhea. Children who are infected may also have a cough and runny nose. As with all viruses, though, some rotavirus infections cause few or no symptoms, especially in adults.Recognition of the condition and proper supportive treatment (rehydration) can prevent serious complications.

Treatment of Rotavirus

Common Treatment of Rotavirus

  • Frequent hand washing is the best tool to limit the spread of rotavirus infection.
  • Vaccine(RotaTeq) has been found to prevent approximately 75% of cases of rotavirus infection and 98% of severe cases.
  • Rehydration fluid can replace lost minerals more effectively than can water or other liquids. Severe dehydration may require intravenous fluids in the hospital.
  • Wash hands after using the toilet, after helping a child use the toilet, after diapering a child, and before preparing or serving food
